Sterlings Rift Perception in The Yellow Birds - Literature Essay Samples
In his novel The Yellow Birds, Kevin Powers takes the reader into the mind of a soldier. This work evokes not only the physical duress of fatigue and fighting, but also the emotional stress and the long-lasting trauma that remains with a soldier even after heââ¬â¢s come home from the war. Powers teaches the reader about the struggles when a young soldier leaves his home, and his family, to serve his country, through the many different types of characters he introduces the reader to throughout the novel. For some of those characters, the life of a soldier is a source of disconnect and even downfall. Among the central themes in The Yellow Birds is the sensation of exile. The circumstances in this form of exile would be the war and the need for soldiers, and the young boys in this novel enlist themselves for the good of their country. Exile is ââ¬Å"the unhealable rift forced between a human being and a native place, between the self and its true home: its essential sadness can never be surmountedâ⬠(Said). Soldiers who are separated from their families, and especially for the younger ones it leaves them with traumatic experiences that no one else can relate to, forcing these young men and women to distance themselves from society. Most notably in this novel, Sergeant Sterling forms a rift, not necessarily from his home, but within himself. Powers teaches us that this separation formed from the exile Sergeant Sterling experiences amounts to the overbearing sadness he experiences when trying to repair this unamendable rift. Sergeant Sterling is first introduced to the reader when Powers describes Bartleââ¬â¢s platoon patrolling on top of a roof for many hours on end. Sterling is in position with rifle in hand and, to stay awake, he puts Tabasco sauce into his eyes, as he smiles at Bartle. This simple gesture shows the unnerving desensitization of Sterling. He wants to appear to the rest of his platoon as stronger and a better soldier than the rest of them, and his mental stability is affected because of this. He distances his conscience from the fighting and uses this to motivate the rest of the young men to do the same. His hard attitude affects how the other men feel while fighting. Bartle describes the way he yells during a shooting and how it puts him into the focus of killing and makes him forget what he is actually doing because his adrenaline takes over control. Bartle says, ââ¬Å"I hated him, I hated the way he excelled in death and brutality and domination. But more than that, I hated the w ay he was necessary, how I needed him to jar me into action even when they were trying to kill me, how I felt like a coward until he screamed into my ear, ââ¬ËShoot these hajji fucks!ââ¬â¢ I hated the way I loved him when I inched up out of the terror and returned fire, seeing him shooting too, smiling the whole time, screaming, the whole rage and hate of these few acres, alive and spreading in and through himâ⬠Sterlingââ¬â¢s exile from his conscience creates an emotional rift helps him excel as a soldier, but it soon becomes evident that this particular skill, to be unaffected by this trauma, is not useful in any other application of life and can cause a certain distance between others in society when Sterling returns to normal civilization. Sterlingââ¬â¢s ability to blindly follow orders gives him an advantage over the other soldiers during the war, but he also has no regard of the outcome of his actions affecting other people around him. He is so separated from his morals while fighting that in non-war situation it becomes hard for him to realize the difference between right and wrong. This is most evident when the platoon is awaiting a flight back to the US in Germany and they have a night out at a popular bar. Sterling is approaching the bargirl after he had come stumbling down the stairs. ââ¬Å"He squeezed her elbow, forcing her arm straight. ââ¬ËGet back over there.ââ¬â¢ She was crying softly to herself now and the red marks along her cheeks looked like a sad painted-on clown smile and her mascara ran in black streaks below her eyes. He sat down next to me and slapped me on the back and grabbed me by the scruff of the neck. ââ¬ËLiving the fucking dream, Private,ââ¬â¢ he bellowed,â⬠They way tha t Bartle describes Sterling harsh actions towards a bargirl that he has never met before, is astonishing. And as Sterling sits down to join him for a drink, he brushes it off as if nothing happened. It is taken into account that Sterling is intoxicated and under stress, but this is no excuse for the way he treats a stranger, especially a young woman. Sterling is so used to the extreme violence that fighting just seems normal to him, and he doesnââ¬â¢t recognize what effect his actions have on other people. The army finds this quality of exile to be enriching when involved in the career of a soldier, but there is little that a soldier can do, once he must enter society again, with those skills that the military presses into them. This unique form of exile that a soldier experiences is different from most because the re-adjustment into society proceeds much quicker than say, a citizen who is exiled from their country for treason. It is different because when the soldiers from the wars come back, they are celebrated. They are not treated as exiles; they are treated as heroes. Many people look up to soldiers as a figure of bravery to aspire to be. This is hard for soldiers such as those depicted in The Yellow Birds, because in their own consciences they realize how morally wrong a lot of the actions they took to protect our country were, and when they are celebrated for those actions it makes it hard for them to repent in their own minds and repair the rift they have created in order to survive. Sergeant Sterlingââ¬â¢s detachment from reality is helpful in his career as a soldier, but as the reader sees when the novel develops, it ultimately leads to his unfortunate death. By showing the reader his emotional disconnect, his willingness to follow orders blindly, and his desensitization towards death, Powers illuminates the havoc that ensues when a soldier is distanced from his past self. The Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms - 1531 Words
Basing the Basics on a Belief in Something Bigger The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, implemented in 1982 outlines the rights and freedoms that Canadians have as citizens of this country. In this paper I will ask whether we need such a charter, whether we can trust the interpretation of the Charter by the Supreme Court and how the Charter balances power in a democratic way. I will then contemplate the foundational place morality holds in the lawmaking process. In all of this I argue that to make a good law one must hold to a moral standard and one must act in the understanding that belief, and not objectivity, plays the main role in rational thought. Section 1, the ââ¬Ëreasonable limitsââ¬â¢ clause, of our Charter makes the wholeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The Supreme Court is made up of legal experts, not moral experts. In order to properly answer a philosophical question, one must transcend self and go to a place of objective reasoning. But, objective reasoning is not possible. No matter how hard one tries to escape the biases of the mind, personal experiences and societal conditioning will always play a part in answering the questions. I find fault in the analogy of society as a man named Peter who is either drunk or sober. The flaw is that Peter can be one of only two things - he must be either entirely drunk, or entirely sober. I propose that Peter is not limited to these two states, but rather he is constantly sipping at the bottle of bias. Peter might get to a state where he is entirely intoxicated (Peter drunk), but he will never blow a 0.0 on the breathalyzer of objectivity. Society is never completely sober and a Supreme Court justice can never entirely remove bias from a decision. I have proposed in these first paragraphs that there are problems with having judges at the head of the legal and moral trajectory of our nation, but surely I am not the first to propose such a thing. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms addresses t his issue by having the threat of a legislature disregarding the Supreme Court. Sections 1 and 33 give parliament just such authority. Growth of Festival 4 My village attracts over 90,000 unique fans to celebrate the UKââ¬â¢s longest running surf event at Fistral Beach and the music festival at Watergate Bay. In recent years the Boardmasters has truly become ââ¬ËCornwallââ¬â¢s Festivalââ¬â¢. Year on year the Boardmasters strives to enhance the event, not only for fans of the festival but also for the town of Newquay and Cornwall County. This is achieved through close workings with the relevant parties including the town and county councils, the emergency services, residents associations and local business. 2012 will once again see application for steady growth across the event in terms of capacity at the music festival site at Watergate Bay and its neighbouring campsite. The increased accommodation should allow a comfortable entry for new visitors to Newquay, bringing with them increased spending and vital repeat tourism. Stakeholders 5 My village Newquay Town Mayor, Andy Hannam said; ââ¬Å"I am pleased to hear that the organisers of the successful Boardmasters event are returning to Newquay for 2012. I personally attended both days of the festival last year enjoying the world class surfing and vast, varied range of music. I was impressed with the way the event was organised and enjoyed by all that took part. Putting on this kind of event is a very difficult balancing act making sure that the people taking part donââ¬â¢t impact in a negative way on the residents living close to the venue. The feedback I received after the event was mainly positive and many lessons are being learned and we will work with the organisers to continue making improvements. I am sure that every effort will be made this year to continue improving the interaction between the Town and the event and Newquay will benefit from the increased visitor numbers we can expect over the weekend. The Boardmasters is a Cornish business and is the busiest week in Newquayââ¬â¢s calendar. As a direct result of the event, visitor spending exceeds ? 5 million throughout the county. The event itself hires over 300 event staff across 20 local businesses as well as using over 30 Cornish contractors and all catering concessions are Cornish based wherever possible. Malcolm Bell, head of Visit Cornwall said; ââ¬Å"Boardmasters is t he high point of the summer season on the North Coast of Cornwall and especially in Newquay. Not only does it contribute almost ? 20million to the local economy but more importantly it delights and thrills tens of thousands of happy visitors. If you love Cornwall, love the beach, love surfing or watching surfing and love great live acts then Newquay and Boardmasters is where you must be this summer. â⬠Management 6 Business Opps 7 Environmental Implications Slide 8 Sustainibility Slide 9 http://www. relentlessenergy. com/features/surfers-against-sewage-at-boardmasters. html SAS at Relentless Energy Drink Boardmasters Surfers Against Sewageââ¬â¢s stand will be present at Relentless Energy Drink Boardmasters, where they will organise daily beach cleans and environmental sessions, and introduce a very intriguing sounding giant board game called Marineopoly. A very welcome addition to Boardmasters http://myvillage. com/article/relentless-energy-drink-boardmasters-2012 Matthew Owen, director of Cool Earth said; The Boardmasters firmly upholds its eco conscience each year. All waste is recycled wherever possible and twice daily beach cleans ensure nothing is left behind. Further to this, the event supports two strong charities, Surfers against Sewage and Cool Earth. Last year, Boardmasters and Cool Earth protected acres of Peruvian rainforest from deforestation, locking in 8000 tonnes of CO2 and saving the habitat of 17 endangered species. ââ¬Å"Boardmasters put on the best festival of the year and, with Cool Earth, saved 40 acres of rainforest from certain destruction. Lets do it again this year. Every single act at Boardmasters saved trees in the rainforest with Cool Earth. Weve never seen a festival so switched on to saving the world. Great acts, great surf and 40 acres of rainforest kept standing. No other festival can compete. Cornwall Councils licensing committee has decided that music at Newquays Fistral Beach has to stop at 11. 30pm and not exceed 65 decibels. The reduction in the time music can be played, which was previously 30 minutes later, at midnight, has come after complaints by some residents who live near the beach. John Lenton, whose company, Fistral Leisure Ltd, was the subject of a licence review by Cornwall Councils environmental protection team, said the council conditions were now jeopardising the music element of the Boardmasters Festival, Newquays biggest event of the year. Mr Lenton holds a licence to stage events at the beachs car park, including music and a skate competition over three days in August as part of the Boardmasters Festival, this year from August 7 to 11. The committee carried out a review of the Fistral beach car park and ordered that background music from both indoors and outside sources will cease by 11. 30pm. The committee ordered that amplified music will be kept to levels that are acceptable to surrounding businesses. The levels are 65 decibels at one monitoring point and 50 decibels at another. An additional condition is that the licensee will monitor the noise at two locations highlighted on the acoustic report at least once an hour while regulated entertainment is being undertaken. Mr Lenton said four or five people living on Esplanade Road had complained about music, the surfing and skating commentary, and even RNLI beach safety announcements. He holds a licence to stage events at the beachs car park, including music and a skate competition over three days as part of the Boardmasters Festival. Mr Lenton said: When are the council officers going to start backing local businesses? Boardmasters is the biggest event of the year and they are trying to push the event out of town. It is all over by midnight. It isnt as if it goes on until 4am. Boardmasters should be thanked, not punished, for holding the event in Newquay ââ¬â 90 per cent of the town is behind it and businesses rely on it. There will come a time when Boardmasters gets tired of being told off. Council officers monitored noise levels at properties on Esplanade Road, located at the southern end of Fistral beach, between August 9 and 15 last year. All events take place at the northern end. A report by environmental protection officer Miranda Flannigan states that the team had received numerous complaints from residents and that Fistral Leisure Ltd had been contacted over poor management Mr Bell said: ââ¬Å"In 2009 we did an economic impact of the Boardmasters by talking to tens of thousands of people to find out their total spend. We found there is an ? 18. 8 million impact as a direct result because of the Boardmasters, which equates to 80% going to Newquay and 20% to the rest of Cornwall. ââ¬Å"Cynics would say a lot of people would be coming to Newquay and Cornwall anyway. But if you have the most cynical view I have no hesitation in stating there is a ? 4. 75 million boost coming from people who would never have come anywhere near Newquay and Cornwall if it was not for the Boardmasters. The event is bigger since 2009 so the amount of money generated is even more. ââ¬Å"Cornwall has got an interesting relationship with Newquay. It is love hate. Other parts of Cornwall tend to be negative, which irritates me. ââ¬Å"The Boardmasters bringing in tens of thousands of people shows what Newquay is about. People now want to know when the Boardmasters is on. In terms of promoting Newquay and Cornwall it is brilliant. â⬠Andrew Topham, from organisers Sports Vision said: ââ¬Å"We are celebrating not only 30 years, but this year will be a six star event with a womenââ¬â¢s and longboard category. There are 200 surfers taking part and the music event has got Fatboy Slim and the Klaxons headlining. There will also be 150 others acts. â⬠An official warm-up event to get everyone in the mood for the Relentless Boardmasters festival will be staged at Bunters in Truro on Friday, featuring rockers Max Raptor, indie folkers The Travelling Band, plus support from the Suitenoir and singer songwriters Tom Law and Joss White. There will also be lots of Boardmasters giveaways. http://www. cornwall. gov. uk/default. aspx? page=32060 Issued on behalf of the Newquay Safe Partnership As Newquay prepares to welcome enthusiastic festival goers to this years Boardmasters event, Newquay Safe partners continue to work closely together to promote safety and to reiterate that anti social behaviour will not be tolerated. Europeââ¬â¢s only surf, skate and music festival returns to Newquay from 8-12 August with thousands of revellers expected to enjoy the ultimate lifestyle experience against the backdrop of our spectacular coastline and welcoming town. Steve Kessell from VisitNewquay says: ââ¬Å"Boardmasters is a prestigious event in two great locations Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay. The festivals mix of high level beach based sport and the music festival compliments Newquays visitor profile of families and younger visitors seeking a vibrant night time experience. As one of the nations favourite seaside resorts Newquay remains a top holiday choice and events such as Boardmasters add excitement to the holiday menu. â⬠Eve Wooldridge, Manager of the Newquay Business Improvement District, says, ââ¬Å"Boardmasters is a majorly important footfall, accommodation and customer spend driver for Newquayââ¬â¢s overall economy and there is a plethora of day and night-time events that appeal to families, couples and young people alike. All of the involved local businesses are gearing up for a successful week and many run corresponding events or promotions around the Boardmasters. It is helpful to see the joined-up working of the various organisations around Newquay Safe and we look forward to seeing thousands of people enjoying our natural surroundings and making the most of the positive Boardmasters experience. â⬠As part of Newquay Safeââ¬â¢s partnership working, the night time Street Safe portacabin will be operating during Boardmasters. Funded and supported by Newquay Town Council, the portacabin is staffed by Devon and Cornwall Police and South Western Ambulance Service. The Street Safe mobile unit will also be out and about to help people in need anywhere in central Newquay with help, advice, support and assistance available for anyone who needs it; whether it is a lost wallet or bag or a safe place to gather their thoughts. Working closely with Street Safe are the local christian organisation, Street Pastors who support the Police, Ambulance Service, Street Marshals and other partners by helping anyone in need of assistance. Volunteer teams work on Friday nights into the early hours of Saturday morning to help anyone who appears vulnerable or worried. They work closely with the police, ambulance services and Street Safe project by providing a listening voice and pastoral support for people who want it. They are also able to signpost people to other services if they need to. This year the ranks of the Street Pastors have been swelled by extra volunteers coming to Newquay from other parts of the country. Newquay Street Pastor Maria Bunyan says: ââ¬Å"We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received and delighted to welcome volunteers from as far afield as Cheshire who have come to boost our numbers and offer their help. â⬠To keep traffic moving during the Boardmasters event, Headland Road will be closed from Wednesday to Sunday and there will be a park and ride on the A3075 near Trevemper, to take people into town, for the duration of Boardmasters. Town Clerk of Newquay, Andy Curtis confirmed ââ¬Å"Boardmasters is becoming widely recognised as a key part of Newquayââ¬â¢s annual event calendar, bringing many new faces to the Town. Newquay Town Council and Newquay Safe partners work very hard with the organisers each year to ensure the event is developed in a safe and sustainable way; addressing many issues which naturally arise from such a heavy volume of people and vehicular traffic in and around Newquay. We look forwards to this yearââ¬â¢s event and welcoming the local and national festival-goers to our town. â⬠Newquay Police will be continuing their No Nonsense campaign to reduce crime and disorder in the popular seaside resort. The robust approach has yielded encouraging results so far this summer leading to a decrease in crime figures and making the resort a better experience for all visitors.

People Up Stairs From: Hassan Nasim Janjua That life is not fair is a common complaint that we all know is frequently heard. Consider a situation that seems grossly unjust. Explain the reasons and propose a solution for the situation you describe. Life is something which God has given us, in this fast world every person has its own life and some of them are enjoying; some of them are not enjoying. We all know that it's a common complaint that life is not fair. Yes, sometime life is not fair but sometime it is fair. It all depends upon the situation. If a person is in good and fair situation and every thing in his life is happening positively he will definitely say that life is very fair with me and I am enjoying my self. On the other hand there is a person who is very poor and he can not afford a good house, food and stylish cloths for himself and his family. He will say that the life is not fair with me and I am upset with my living. So there are a lot of reason for this common complaint; that life is not fair. I have an other example of life that if a person gets into the situation, in which he is completely innocent, but at last he was hanged. So from this we can say that life is unfair with him. Life depends upon situation, reasons, thoughts and other relation in the world. World is the place where everybody in living, but everybody in this world has its own culture, own standard of living, own ideas and values. Talking about the world there are some countries which are very poor lets take the example of Pakistan. In Pakistan a pay of normal person is RS. 5000 per month which is equal to $90 US dollars. So there is question that he is enjoying himself or not. What I think is he is not enjoying. On the other hand there is person who is getting $5000, he is enjoying because it is enough for his living. So the point I want to clear is that fairness of life depend where you stand. God has given us life now it depend on us that we want to make life fair or unfair. If your life is not fair here go to other place, try to work hard. . Try to win the race of the world. I know it is not easy to jump in a moving train but we should try. There was a man in a village. He was a very good farmer, and he used to work very hard to earn his living. He was very happy with himself and his way of living. He had two daughters and a wife. All of them were enjoying their life. But was a person who was gangster of the village he was bad guy. He spend more than three years in jail. He fall in love with one of the daughter of the farmer. Farmer was very upset with situation of life. He did not want her daughter to marry him as he was a bad person. At last he went to the police and asked them to arrest the bad guy but police was afraid of him. They can't, so when bad guy came to know that the farmer went to the police. He put farmer in such situation that farmer was arrested and thrown in the prison. Bad guy raped his daughter. And when the farmer came out of the jail, everything was out of his hands. Creative Writing
